Uganda has more bid species per square Kilometer than any other country in Africa. Uganda is roughly the same size of United Kingdom but can boast a national list of 1013 species of birds. This figure nearly represents more than half of the species that can be found on the whole continent.

Birding in Uganda

Birding Entebbe

Entebbe has been for long well known as the birding paradise. The beautiful landscaped Botanical Gardens established in 1901, lie on the shore of Africa’s greatest lake. They offer a superb introduction to Uganda’s bird species and situated conveniently close to the Capital and the Entebbe International Airport. The drive from the Airport takes 10 minutes. The garden are actually near te Entebbe Botanical Beach Hotel and an entrance fee is charged. The garden host a variety of open country and woodland species and you can spend a pleasant of hours here

The Botanical Gardens avails you a chance to do birding in an attractive environment very close to Kampala the Capital City and Entebbe International airport. Great Blue and Ross Turaco, Klaas, Diederik cuckoos Woodland Kingfisher, Black and White casqued Hornbill and African fish Eagle. Other important Bird areas in Entebbe include Lutembe bay and Mabamba papyrus swamp for the rare shoebill stork.

Birding Kampala

The area in and around offers a variety of exciting birding opportunities. Uganda’s large and modern capital lies on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, Its well wooded outskirts supporting a wide variety of birds. In fact, the city of Kampala may provide your best chance of seeing certain species such as Bat Hawk and African Hobby. Both breed regularly in tall trees in the urban area and are commonly observed overhead at dusk in the city centre for example around Makerere University and the Sheraton Hotel. Another good spot for these spectacular birds is near Backpackers Hostel, African Hobby has rested in the campsite and Bat Hawk is regularly seen nearby. Take the second left after the turn off to the Backpackers Hostel on the road to Natete and walk down, a Bat Hawk often perches in the massive tree here at dust.

Birding Mabira Forest

Lying astride highway to Eastern Uganda less than an hour drive from Kampala, Mabira forest supports over 300 bird species, many of which are difficult to see elsewhere in Uganda. An excellent trail network allows access.

Flowering trees are inviting to the sunbirds like the superb sunbirds, Blue Throated Brown, Green Throated and Olive bellied. Other forest species include Forest Robin, Grey crowned Nero finch, African Blue Flycatcher and Speckle breasted Woodpecker.

Birding at Mabamba Wetlands

Mabamba Bay is a unique extensive marsh stretching through along narrow bay, fringed with papyrus towards the main body of Lake Victoria. It forms part of Buwaya Bay South-west of Nakiwogo Bay both of which are located in the west of Entebbe International Airport. It lies between Busi Island and Buwaya/Zziba village on the main land.
